- ★ ★ ★ ★ ★During my recent visit, I learned that even back in the 1800's, NC state's general assembly did not prioritize spending money on education. Although the poorest of the 13 colonies, NC's general assembly chose to commission Italian sculptor Canova to sculpt a statue of George Washington for $10,000. Ironically, NC is currently ranked the 5th most attractive state to begin a business because of an attractive tax base. However, 200 years later, NC's General Assembly still does not prioritize education - contributing to NC's ranking of #5 instead of #1 or maybe even #2. Hurrah! Hurrah!
